No comments :

10+1. Anfield 45,276

This stadium is the home of Liverpool F.C. Most true football fans, or people who just know something about this sport and have heard about the Liverpool F.C. , might think that the team has a large stadium, at least the forth or third on the list. I can assure you: it is only the 11th. The Anfield is a football stadium nowhere else but in Liverpool. It was built in 1884. It has been the home of Liverpool F.C. since 1892, when they formed. Before that year it was the home of Everton F.C. (Then they moved to Goodison Park). The record attendance in the stadium was noted in 1952 on an FA cup match against the Wolverhampton Wanderers, 61,905 people were curious to watch it. The Liverpool F.C. is popular with their amazing performance at the Anfield. The team had a wonderful winning period, that included 85 matches at home, which is an astonishing fact (scored 212 goals <> Got 35).

10. City of Manchaster Stadium 47,805

This stadium is also called as Etihad stadium because of the sponsor of the team it hosts. That team is the Manchester City. The City of Manchester stadium is a bit newer than the Liverpool’s one. It was built about 120 years after the Anfield. This great stadium hosted the Premier League Final match in 2012. The Manchaster City won the P. League with two last-minute goals by Edin Dzeko and Kun Agüero. Those goals were scored in the 92th (2-2) and the 94th (3-2) minutes. With the 2 unbelieveble goals the City got 3 points for the match and the final result became 89 pts for City which was equal to Manchester United's 89 points, and the City won the league because of the better goal difference. This stadium also hosted the Final of the UEFA Cup (Europe League now) in 2008.

The Stadium of Light is a football stadium in Sunderland. Sunderland A.F.C. is a Premier League team. The Highest attendance in league at the stadium was recorded in 2002 on a match against Liverpool, but even then the stadium was not full. As the other ones, this stadium also hosts events apart from football competitions. Great musicians played there as Bon Jovi, Coldplay, Rihanna, Pink and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

8. Ibrox Stadium 51,082

The one of the greatest stadiums in Scotland is the Ibrox Stadium. The edifice is the home of Rangers F.C. in Glasgow. Ibrox is the 3rd biggest football stadium in Scotland after the Hampden Park and the Celtic Park. It was built in 1899 with the name Ibrox Park. The Ibrox Park was completely rebuilt in 1971 after the tragical Ibrox disaster, when 66 people died and more than 250 got injured. The record attendance of the stadium is an awesome number: 118,567 which was recorded in 1939 on the Old Firm (the big opponent’s match Rangers vs Celtic). This is definitely the absolute record for any British league matches. This number means that, considering the population of Scotland in 1940, every 39th Scottish person was in the stadium.

7. Hampden Park 52,063

The Hampden Park stadium is the 2nd largest one in Scotland. Hampden Park is used by the Scotland National Football team, also by the Queen’s Park F.C. Hampden was the largest stadium when it was built (1903) with 100,000 seats. The capacity reached 150.000 between 1927 and 1937. The record attendance derives from that time with 149,415 for a Scotland v England match 1937. 149,415 is the record of all European international matches. World record of attendance on club matches was recorded here too: 147,365 on a Celtic v Aberdeen meeting. After taking tighter safety regulations the stadium had been rebuilt, which meant the decreasing of the capacity. Hampden is a UEFA category four stadium, it hosted Champions League finals and a UEFA Cup final.

6. St. James’ Park 52,404

The owner of this stadium is the Newcastle United. However the stadium was opened in 1892 as Newcastle’s stadium, it was used for football in 1880 already. Between 1998 and 2000, the building got expanded. The construction was also used for international matches, and it was a locale of the 2012 Olympic Games, besides it gave place to 3 matches of the European Championship 1996. In addition to the regular ones, St James’ Park hosted some charity football matches, also Rock concerts. 4. Emirates Stadium 60,361

Emirates stadium is the home ground of Arsenal F.C. (the Gunners) from London. Emirates stadium is also known as Ashburton Grove. This is the 3rd largest football stadium in England by the capacity. The facility cost 470 million pounds. The highest participation was 60,961 when they played against Manchester United, but the lowest attendance didn’t decrease below 46,000.

3. Millenium Stadium 74,500

The stadium was opened in the summer of 1999 as the national stadium of Wales, situated in Cardiff. This stadium is second to none in Wales by capacity. However it is originally used by the Wales national rugby union team, it is also used by the Wales national football team. In Great Britain there are three stadiums with that title, the Old Trafford (England), the Wembley (England) and the Millenium Stadium (Wales). The Live Earth concert series, which started in 2007 is yearly organized in the Wembley stadium. The purpose of the concert series is to draw the attention of people to the Global Warming. Top 10 Largest Football Stadiums in the World

As a football (soccer) fan, I wanted to know which teams have the largest stadiums, so I gathered data from around the globe and made this list of the ten biggest, based on capacity.
Note: this list is only of stadiums used for association football and by National teams and local football clubs.

#10 Borg al Arab Stadium

This list starts in North Africa. Our first stop is in Cairo Egypt. In the position of number 10 we have the Borg al Arab Stadium, home to the Egyptian Army National Team. The stadium, which opened in 2007, accommodates 86,000 seated fans, occupies 145 feddans (approximately 145 acres), and is surrounded by a fence which is 3 km long. The main reason the stadium was built was because Egypt was in the running for a bid of the FIFA World Cup in 2010.

NASS crisis: Buhari to meet Dogara, Saraki, Lawan groups

No comments :
•Shehu: President committed to peace in legislature The process of healing the wounds inflicted on the All Progressives Congress (APC) by the recent emergence of Dr. Bukola Saraki as Senate President and Yakubu Dogara as House of Representatives Speaker may have been set in motion by President Muhammadu Buhari. The President plans to meet Dr. Saraki, Dogara and the aggrieved members of the Unity Forum, supporters of Senator Ahmed Lawan, who was the APC’s official candidate for the Senate Presidency. The meeting may come up this week, The Nation gathered last night. Dogara already has an appointment with the President, sources said. The Lawan group is awaiting confirmation of its appointment with the President. A source familiar with the development said the President is desirous of getting the crisis resolved once and for all. “The President intends to appeal to all parties to bury the hatchets in order to move forward,” the source said. “The President will meet formally and informally with all parties to the crisis in the new week (this week). He is neither shunning Saraki nor Dogara as being insinuated. But the President is trying to ensure peace and reconciliation. “Buhari is disturbed that the take-off of the 8th National Assembly was not smooth as anticipated. Rather than blame any party, he wants an end to the crisis without interference in the internal affairs of the Senate or House of Representatives.” Another source said: “The President might meet with members of the Unity Forum of Senator Ahmed Lawan on how the National Assembly can move forward. “The meeting was slated for last week but most members of the forum were out of Abuja and it had to be postponed at the last minute.” The Lawan group had presented six demands to APC leadership for a sustainable reconciliation. The demands are as follows: o APC leadership should instil discipline and intervene in the choice of some principal officers in the Senate. o It is better to leave the choice of some principal officers to APC than zonal caucuses in order not to further divide the governing party o Ranking must be considered in the selection of principal officers. o Concession of some principal offices to the Unity Forum including Ahmed Lawan (Majority Leader); George Akume (Deputy Majority Leader); Prof. Sola Adeyeye (Senate Whip); and Abu Ibrahim (Deputy Whip). o Reconciliation is possible if Saraki group does not play the politics of winner- takes- all o PDP should not be allowed to produce any principal officer except those due to it as the minority party in the Senate When contacted, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said: “I am aware that the President is already scheduled to receive the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara in the week. “The President believes in institutional respect, there is no way he will shun the leaders of the National Assembly. He is not avoiding Saraki or Dogara. ” On Friday, Dr. Saraki, accompanied by some Senators and former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, met former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his Abeokuta residence on the National Assembly crisis. Saraki, emerging from the two hour meeting told reporters that he was at Obasanjo’s residence to “see the former President, as one of our fathers and former President, to pay our homage and visit to him, get his advice, get his blessing and also to consult. “We all know President Obasanjo’s value to this country and we are here to tap from that wisdom and that knowledge and experience. “I think as you can see, things are moving smoothly definitely. You should rest assured that all that would be put behind us shortly; we are very confident about that.” He expressed optimism that that crisis sparked by his emergence as Senate president would soon be resolved. It was gathered yesterday that Chief Obasanjo made no commitment to Saraki during the visit. A source at the session said: “Obasanjo noted the issues raised and avoided any commitment for strategic reasons. He was careful not to be misrepresented by some members of the delegation. “I think he opted for a middle course approach because his loyalists are also divided along pro and anti-Saraki. “Although Obasanjo congratulated Saraki, his body language suggested that he might, however, wade in the crisis in the National Assembly and resolve it.”

Liverpool transfer news: Skrtel to sign three-year deal, Borini set for exit to Italy

No comments :
Liverpool’s busy transfer is set to continue with some more activity in the coming days. After signing Danny Ings, James Milner and Adam Bogdan, the Reds are set to keep long-standing centre-back Martin Skrtel at the club after the Slovakian agreed a new deal. On the other hand, striker Fabio Borini could be set to leave for Bologna in his homeland Italy. Skrtel, as reported here by The Times, was being targeted by Inter Milan and it looked like he would be leaving Anfield. Liverpool were initially offering him a deal based on appearances, and the defender vented his frustration in public. But now a three-year deal has been agreed, and the 30 year-old will continue as a part of Brendan Rodgers’ side next season. Skrtel’s agent had this to say after the agreement was reached: “I confess that there were not mere rumours, the interest from Inter was real.” “The player had been thinking about his future and eventually opted to remain at Liverpool. As this time I can say that it is likely [he will sign a new contract].” Skrtel has been at the club since 2008 and has made close to 300 appearances in all competitions. He has been a regular in the heart of the Reds’ defence under Rodgers, even when the manager has opted to go for a system with three at the back.
In other news, Italian website Tutto Mercato Web has reported that Fabio Borini could be set for an exit from Liverpool, after it emerged that the player’s agent met with representatives from Bologna to discuss a potential move. Borini was at the youth academy at the Seria A club for six years between 2001 and 2007, before being signed by Chelsea. Notwithstanding brief stints at Parma and Roma, he has spent most of his career in the Premier League, but has failed to make his mark at any of the clubs. Liverpool transfer news
Borini was Rodgers first signing at Liverpool back in 2012, but after a lukewarm first season, a loan move to Sunderland was agreed. He returned to Anfield last year, but only managed to score 1 goal in all competitions.

French club Lyon’s transfer policy in the summer transfer window will be to keep hold of their star players. Club chairman Jean-Michel Aulas has repeatedly said that he wishes to keep hold of Lacazette and Fekir, two of his best players in the summer, despite strong interests from big Premier League clubs.
In order to do so, Lyon might have to part ways with few players to balance the club’s financial account. Le10Sport speculates that Lyon defender Samuel Umtiti could be one of the players who could leave the club next summer. 1948751_w2 Lyon have recruited Jeremy Morel and the club therefore are ready to cash in on Umtiti. The 21-year-old has already played over 100 games for his club after graduating from the club’s youth academy and has represented France national team at various youth levels. Jose Mourinho is a big fan of the player. The Chelsea boss wants him to form a central defensive partnership with Kurt Zouma. Le10 claim that Lyon are expecting a bid from Chelsea, with an offer anything between €10-15m would be enough to lure him away. La Liga giants Real Madrid are also thought to be interested. Meanwhile, Chelsea are also looking to sign Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld and could send Kurt Zouma

Manchester United target Nicolas Otamendi hints at Valencia exit

Nicolas Otamendi Manchester United have received a massive boost in signing Nicolas Otamendi after the defender hinted that he is open to leaving Valencia in the summer transfer window. The Argentine international’s no-nonsense defending and his rise in form during the 2014-15 season has seen him attract interest from the Premier League giants. Louis van Gaal wants the South American defender to join him at Old Trafford. Otamendi has €50m release clause and his agent has already admitted the strong centre-back will leave the La Liga outfit this summer. The 27-year-old said he has authorised his representative to talk on his behalf and could leave his current employers. “Valencia know very well what I want. From there, every word my agent says is obviously with my authorisation,” Otamendi told ESPN. “(My agent) fully has my authorisation to speak with whoever he needs to. I’ve had a talk with the president and my agent, and he knows very well what my wish is, but for now I’ve told my agent that my head is here and I’m leaving it in his hands, to do what he needs to do.” The defender is currently on national duty as Argentina are taking part in the 2015 Copa America in Chile. United need to sign a central defender as the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager wants to strengthen his back four for the next season. Otamendi’s experience and strong defensive capabilities will only bolster United’s heart of the defence Van Gaal targets to win the league title.

But I’m buzzing and just excited to get started,” Gomez said. “The club has got great history and it’s a great club, and one that I’ve always been following from when I was young. “The style of football and the top players here was somewhere that I wanted to go and get better and learn, and play good football. It was an easy decision.”

Blackhawks take lead in Stanley Cup Finals

The scoreline ended a shutout streak for Lightning's goal-tender who had held opponents scoreless for over 113 minutes [AP]
The Chicago Blackhawks overcame a slow start to race past the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in the opening game of the Stanley Cup Finals.
Trailing 1-0 deep into the third period, Tuevo Teravainen tied the contest with a wrist shot at 13:28 before Antoine Vermette came through with the game-winner with less than five minutes to play.
With the game looking like it would head to overtime, Chicago put pressure on the Lightning and when the puck came loose in their zone Vermette gathered and fired it past goaltender Ben Bishop to complete the comeback.
"We just had to stay patient and not get frustrated," Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford told reporters after making 22 saves.
Crawford made a stop on a Ryan Callahan shot just before Chicago's equaliser to keep his tem alive.
"I was a little more aggressive than usual. I just tried to take away any net he may have."
Chicago's outburst ended a shutout streak for Bishop who had held opponents scoreless for a total of 113:28, dating back to Game Six of the Eastern Conference final.
Bishop finished with 19 stops but the Lightning would lament their lost opportunity.
Both teams needed Game Seven wins in their conference final battles, but Tampa Bay's playoff road has been particularly tough.
They needed seven games to take down Detroit in the opening series and six to beat Montreal before their seven-game thriller with the New York Rangers.
Game Two of the best-of-seven series is on Saturday in Tampa Bay.

EU court allows ending life support for comatose man

Europe's top human rights court has allowed doctors to stop treatment of a French man left comatose after a car accident seven years ago, a case that has drawn nationwide attention amid debate about end-of-life practices.
The European Court of Human Rights on Friday confirmed a decision by a French court last year that Vincent Lambert had been clear he did not want to be kept in a vegetative state.
The court's ruling said withdrawing artificial nutrition and hydration would not violate the European Convention on Human Rights.
Lambert's family members disagree on whether to keep him alive artificially. His wife wants doctors to stop life support for him but his parents disagree.
"There's no relief, no joy to express. We'd just like his will to be done", Lambert's wife Rachel said following the ruling of the Strasbourg-based court.
The lawyer for Lambert's parents, Jean Paillot, expressed "great disappointment" and called on doctors to reassess Lambert's condition and "make a new medical decision", stressing that the initial decision had been taken in January 2014.
"We'll continue to fight", said Lambert's mother.
Euthanasia, which involves an act to kill the patient, is not legal in France. But end-of-life legislation allows doctor to stop treatments in certain cases, following a complex process that includes consultation with the family.
Vincent Lambert's case has prompted political movement on the issue.
A new bill, backed by the Socialist government, is currently under discussion in Parliament to allow doctors to keep terminally ill patients sedated until death comes.
Terminal or palliative sedation doesn't actively kill patients. It involves medicating patients until they die naturally of their illnesses or until they starve.
But critics say it means patients can be sedated for weeks before they die and that it may be more humane to opt for euthanasia.
All recent polls have shown that a large majority of French people favour legalising euthanasia.
Euthanasia is currently legal in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Irish FA accepted $5m from FIFA over 2009 playoff loss

The Irish FA (FAI) accepted a $5m payment by FIFA to avoid a legal case over a controversial World Cup playoff defeat in 2009, world football's governing body has confirmed.
Ireland were knocked out in a two-legged playoff by France for the the 2010 South Africa World Cup, with the decisive goal in the second-leg coming after a handball by French striker Thierry Henry in extra-time.
With moral outrage over the goal in Ireland and beyond growing, FIFA and the FAI came to a financial agreement not to proceed with legal action.
It was a payment to the association... not to proceed with a legal case.
John Delaney, FAI chief executive
FIFA confirmed on Thursday that the payment was a loan that would have been paid back had Ireland qualified for the 2014 World Cup.
"In January 2010 FIFA entered into an agreement with FAI in order to put an end to any claims against FIFA," it said in a statement.
"FIFA granted FAI a loan of $5m for the construction of a stadium in Ireland. At the same time, UEFA also granted the FAI funds for the same stadium.
"The terms agreed between FIFA and the FAI were that the loan would be reimbursed if Ireland qualified for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Ireland did not qualify.
"Because of this, and in view of the FAI's financial situation, FIFA decided to write off the loan as per 31 December 2014."
Former Arsenal and Barcelona forward Henry stopped the ball going out of play with his hand, before crossing for William Gallas to score.
The game in Paris in 2009 ended 1-1 after with France progressing to the World Cup 2-1 on aggregate.
'Good agreement for the FAI'
FAI chief executive John Delaney criticised FIFA President Sepp Blatter at the time for his handling of the incident and accused the Swiss of being "disrespectful".
Speaking to Irish state broadcaster RTE on Thursday, Delaney said: "It was a payment to the association... not to proceed with a legal case.
Blatter resigns
"We felt we had a legal case against FIFA because of how the World Cup hadn't worked out because of the Thierry Henry handball, also the way Blatter behaved if you remember on stage, having a snigger, having a laugh at us.
"So that day when I went in and told him how I felt about him... there were some expletives used, we came to an agreement... It was a very good agreement for the FAI, a very legitimate agreement for the FAI."
FIFA is currently in the middle of the biggest crisis in football history.
Nine FIFA officials and five business executives were indicted by the US last Wednesday on corruption charges, with seven arrested in Zurich ahead of FIFA's annual congress on Friday.
Blatter was re-elected president for a fifth term but just four days after the appointment, he confirmed he will be stepping down. It was then reported that the FIFA boss was under investigation by the FBI.
There have also been renewed calls for Russia and Qatar to be stripped of hosting rights for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Yemen president sacks Saleh nephew as military attache

Brigadier Ammar Mohammed Abdullah Saleh, the nephew of former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, has been dismissed by presidential decree from his role as a military attache in Ethiopia.
Thursday's announcement came on the same day that former al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) informant Hani Muhammad Mujahid told Al Jazeera's Investigative Unit that the brigadier had handed him funds for the 2008 attack on the US embassy in Sanaa, which killed 18 people.
President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi issued a presidential decree on Thursday "calling for the dismissal of Brigadier Ammar Mohammed Abdullah Saleh from his military duties as a military attache in Ethiopia".
Informant: Former Yemen President Saleh supported al-Qaeda
Saleh's nephew was the deputy director of the National Security Bureau at the time.
Mujahid also alleged that the brigadier had a close relationship with Qasim al-Raymi, AQAP's military commander.
The former informant made the claims to Al Jazeera for a documentary called Al-Qaeda Informant, which focuses on his allegations that former President Saleh supported, and even directed, AQAP while he was Yemen's leader.
Spain demand
During his work as an informant, Mujahid said he provided information about both the US embassy assault and an attack that killed eight Spanish tourists in July 2007. In both cases, he says his information was ignored.
On Thursday, the Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that Esteve Maso, a survivor of the 2007 car bomb attack at the Balqis Temple in Marib, Yemen, had called on Spanish judges and prosecutors to reopen their investigation into the bombing.
Maso lost his wife in the bombing, which also killed two Yemenis.
Judge Fernando Andreu of the Audiencia Nacional led the investigation in 2007.
A team of investigators went to Yemen at the time. But after giving an initial response to a request for information, Yemeni authorities failed to reply to Spanish investigators and so the case in Madrid was closed, pending new information.
Peace talks
Meanwhile, Yemen's Houthi rebels agreed on Thursday to join UN-backed peace talks in Geneva planned for June 14.

NEITI urges Buhari to recover N1.4tn from oil companies

The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to consider the recovery of over $7.5bn (N1.4tn) from oil and gas companies operating in the country as a major priority of his economic policy agenda expected to be unfolded very soon.

The agency said in a statement issued on Tuesday that the amount represented clear cases of underpayment and under-assessment of taxes, royalties and rents revealed by NEITI in its independent audit reports on the industry, which had not been adequately addressed.
The statement quoted the Executive Secretary, NEITI, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, to have made the call in Abuja at an oil and gas conference to articulate an agenda for the new administration in support of the proposed industry reforms.
She explained that at a time when the new administration was in dire need of funds to tackle complex problems facing the nation, recovery of the amount should be pursued vigorously with political will and the seriousness it deserved.
Ahmed gave the assurance that NEITI was ready and willing to provide every information and data to assist the government to recover the funds.
She also said that a total of $11.6bn, which represents outstanding total dividends arising from loans and interest repayment from Federal Government’s investment in Liquefied Natural Gas, also needed to be recovered into the government’s coffers.
She said, “Our 2012 audit report discovered that total dividend, loans and interest repayment from the LNG paid to the NNPC in 2012 was $2.8bn; however, in the course of NEITI’s audit, the NNPC was unable to provide any evidence that the funds were remitted to the Federation Account as required by law.
“The total amount received by the NNPC from the LNG under the same circumstances, which has not been remitted to the Federation Account, stands at $11.6bn.”
Ahmed also used the forum to call for full investigation into the transfer of eight oil wells sold by Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company in 2010 and 2011.
“The position of NEITI is that the whole transaction is not transparent,” she added.
She also used the forum to convey NEITI’s position for the removal of oil subsidy on petroleum products in order to save the nation from huge revenue loss and embarrassment that the management of the subsidy scheme represented.
“It has been the position of NEITI that the oil subsidy regime is a fraud that should not be allowed to stand any longer; the amount spent annually is enough to repair the refineries or even build new ones,” Ahmed said.
The NEITI boss advised the new administration to provide the political will required for the implementation of the other findings and recommendations contained in the agency’s independent reports.

Senators deny boycotting House of Assembly vote

Abuja - A group of senators, under the platform of the Unity Forum, have rejected the election of Bukola Saraki as the Senate President.

The legislators, while addressing journalists at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, also refuted reports they boycotted the poll to choose House leaders, as has been widely reported.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Banabas Gemade, said they were attending a meeting with President Mohammed Buhari at the International Conference Centre.

“We did not boycott the inauguration, we were invited to a meeting with President Mohammed Buhari at the International Conference Centre, Gemade said.
He said the members that voted did not constitute a quorum.

"When 53 Senators are outside during the nomination it is totally wrong to close the nomination,” Gemade said.

In his reaction, George Akume said the election of Senate President through a ballot without 53 legislators was "wrong."

"Before we could rush from the venue of the meeting with the President, the election was over," said Akume.

Bukola was elected on Tuesday.

Lagos - A hotel attendant, Adie Fidelis-Ugbe, 26, on Wednesday appeared before an Abule Egba Magistrates' Court in Lagos for allegedly beating up his lover.

Police did not kill Falaki, says AIG

Kano - Mr Tambari Yabo, the Assistant Inspector General in Charge of Zone 1, Kano, has dismissed insinuations by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that the police were responsible for the death of Prof. Ahmed Falaki.
Yabo spoke on Wednesday in Kano while briefing newsmen on the issue.
He recalled that on Feb. 14, the police reported that a gang of insurgents had attacked a police station in Kibiya Local Government Area of the state where they exchanged gun shots with the police.
Yabo explained that while trying to escape, the insurgents ran across the late don in company with his brother and driver and snatched their vehicle.
He added that late Falaki headed to Fala village a few meters away from where their vehicle was snatched to seek for assistance.
“The people of the village surrounded them thinking they were among the insurgents.
"Falaki was assaulted by over 2,000 villagers and this led to his death.
"Five of our men were there but in mufti. They could not stop the incident due to the large number of the villagers,’’ he said.
Yabo said that thorough investigation that involved the brother of the late don had shown that he was not shot.
“The corpse of the late professor was taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital Kano where a post mortem was conducted.
"It was stated by the medical doctor that he died of multiple scalp laceration from assault, not gun shot,’’ Yabo said.
He said the police in Kano had arrested some suspects and charged them to court.

14 foreigners charged for illegally storing petrol

No comments :

The suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges with their lawyers urging the court to release them on bail.

Lagos - Fourteen nationals from Britain, Russia, Ukraine and Japan were charged Wednesday with illegally trading and storing petroleum products in oil-rich but cash-poor Nigeria.
Crude stolen from sabotaged pipelines and illegally refined oil products are regularly smuggled out and sold on the lucrative black market, an illicit business that is estimated to cost the country some much-needed $6 billion (5.3 billion euros) a year in revenue.
Nigeria's anti-graft agency the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned the accused in a Lagos high court for conspiring to store 4,500 tonnes of petroleum products in three vessels in February without authorisation.
It was not immediately clear if the products were to be taken out of Nigeria and if so, to which country they were headed.
Presiding judge Ibrahim Buba remanded the suspects in custody until they met their bail conditions.
They were also ordered to surrender their passports to the EFCC, while the court fixed another hearing for June 17.
Nigeria is Africa's leading oil producer but has no functioning refineries, forcing crude to be exported then its products imported in a process that has been seen as wide open to fraud.
The government keeps the cost of fuel at the pumps low, currently 87 naira ($0.44, 0.39 euros) per litre, and pays fuel importers the difference between the market rate and their costs.
They shut depots several weeks ago claiming non-payment by the government, causing a crippling shortage of fuel that brought the country to a virtual standstill.
Agreement was reached to lift the blockade just days before Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in as president on May 29.
Buhari won elections two months earlier on a pledge to crack down on rampant corruption, including in the oil sector.

Credit card 'convenience checks' can carry painful fees

No comments :

Those checks your credit card company sends you may be tempting. But if you use them, it'll probably cost you.

The so-called "convenience checks'' are one form of a cash advance, and a new survey from CreditCards.com finds that such advances often come with high fees and interest rates.
Of the 100 cards reviewed by the site, 98 charged for a cash advance, and most often the fee was 5% of the amount, or $10, whichever is more.
And unlike a regular credit card purchase, interest on cash advances usually starts accruing right after the transaction. Given that the average interest rate on an advance is 24%, a steeper rate than what's usually attached to a standard purchase, consumers can wind up owing far more than they bargained for.
"I think that people generally understand that the cash advance is kind of a different animal than your standard credit card purchase, I just don't know that they know fully all the details,'' says Matt Schulz, senior industry analyst for CreditCards.com. Interest kicking in immediately, for instance, "can make those super high interest rates an even dicier proposition than they would normally be.''
A typical $1,000 cash advance would cost an extra $69 even if it's paid off in 30 days because of the fee and interest beginning to accrue immediately. On the other hand, a standard credit card purchase of $1,000 would not accrue any interest if paid off within that same month-long period.
Other credit card transactions that might be considered cash advances are money orders, wire transfers and even the purchase of a lottery ticket.
Schulz adds that a consumer who only pays the minimum amount due may not make a dent in what they owe for a cash advance. That's because the federal Credit CARD Act allows card issuers to direct a minimum payment to the balance that carries the lowest interest rate. And that's unlikely to be the higher interest cash advance.
"The longer you let those high interest rate balances continue to grow, the harder and harder it will be to eventually get rid of that debt,'' he says.
Despite the costs, a cash advance may sometimes be necessary, Schulz acknowledges, and it can be less onerous than a payday loan, or in some cases, even an overdraft.
"When you boil it all down, what people need to know is that cash advances can be the best of a bunch of really bad options when times get tough,'' he says. "If you do (take) one, it's incredibly important to pay it off as soon as you possibly can because the math can work against you really quickly.''
"But,'' he emphasizes, "under normal circumstances, they're something you should avoid.''
Based on CreditCards.com's review of 100 credit cards, those cards with the highest APRs for a cash advance were:
•First Premier Bank credit card (36.00%)
•BP Visa and the Texaco Visa (both 29.99%)
•ExxonMobil SmartCard (29.95%)
